The Best Mulled Wine

MulledWine copyOne of the things that left me smitten with London were the many little markets that are scattered through out the large city. They are found in the most unexpected of places -under a gorgeous brick bridge, next to a hidden little chapel or in the old Royal horse stables. Although each market has something different to offer – from vintage finds to gourmet pies- every market has at least one lovely mulled wine stand with a “bloke” inviting you to “have a try, love”. I found myself drinking this warm and comforting drink every single evening as we walked through the Borough market and took in the Christmas lit scenery.

We set up our Christmas tree this past weekend and with London in mind I knew right away that a mug of delicious mulled wine would be the perfect addition to our traditional routine. Although there are many recipes out there, I found this one to be most like the ones I had in London. On top of being delicious, it is easy and fast and will be a hit at your Christmas party!

Ingredients

1 bottle of {cheap} red wine – just make sure the blend you pick is not too sweet

1/4 cup of sugar

1 star of anise

4 whole cloves

2 cinnamon sticks

2 oranges

{Pour the bottle of wine into a pot over medium heat and mix in sugar, spices, cinnamon sticks and the juice of the first orange.Cut the second orange into slices and then quarter each slice – add them into the wine mixture. Let the wine and spices simmer for 5-7 minutes while stirring continuously. Do not allow the wine to boil. Serve into beautiful mugs & enjoy!}

{Makes enough for 2 and a half mugs}
